When Life Gives You Lemons, Build a Lemonade Empire

(Because a pitcher just isn’t going to cut it.)

Let’s just go ahead and call it—plans are nice, but life laughs at them. And if you’re building something from scratch, whether it’s a startup, a strategy, or a second chance, you already know that “setbacks” tend to show up uninvited and usually at the worst possible time.

But here’s the thing no one tells you: that’s the good stuff. That’s where it gets interesting.

Lemons are inevitable 🍋

But bitterness? That’s optional.

The moment you decide to build something bold—something outside the lines of a 9-to-5 with a steady paycheque and predictable outcomes—you’re also agreeing to a fair amount of chaos. Even if you don’t know it yet.

It might be a grant that didn’t come through.
Or a product launch that flopped.
Or a partnership that looked perfect on paper... until it wasn’t.

Or "an amazing hire" that wasn't so amazing after all.

It could be something deeply personal that hits at exactly the wrong time—family stuff, financial strain, or just burnout that no amount of coffee can fix.

Whatever flavour your “lemons” come in, they aren’t the end of the story—unless you let them be.

The trick? Don’t bounce back—build forward.

Resilience is the baseline. Evolution is the magic.

Everyone loves to talk about “bouncing back,” but I’m not really here for that narrative. I don’t want to bounce—I want to build.

When something goes wrong (and let’s be clear, it will), I’ve learned to zoom out. What’s the pattern? What’s the real opportunity underneath the sting? Where’s the upgrade hiding in the failure?

And of course as a leader, I'm continuously evaluating where I might be failing or lacking, and what I can build, learn or deploy to course correct for next time.

I’m not saying it’s easy. But that mindset shift—from recovery to reinvention—is everything. It’s how you move from being someone who gets through tough times to someone who transforms because of them.

Roamlii didn’t come from a flawless blueprint

It came from paying attention when things didn’t work

I didn’t create Roamlii because everything in tourism was going swimmingly. I built it because I was frustrated—watching small businesses struggle to be seen, and travellers miss out on incredible experiences simply because there wasn’t a better system to connect them.

Even our original name, Pathfinder365, eventually became a limitation. It worked until it didn’t. And when that moment came, we didn’t cling to it—we rebranded, evolved, and built something that felt truer to who we are now.

That wasn’t a step backward. That was a power move. A fresh squeeze, if you will. 🍋

Sometimes the lemon is the lesson

Other times, it’s the launchpad

One of the most underrated skills in entrepreneurship is being able to separate what didn’t work from what you’re still here to do.

You can let one rough funding round, one botched pitch, or one bad hire define you—or you can let it inform your next move. But make no mistake: you still get to choose.

And if you’ve ever had a day where you thought, “Why am I doing this again?”—welcome to the club. The real question isn’t whether you’ll face those moments. It’s whether you’ll use them as fuel or let them flatten you.

You don’t need a silver lining

You need a juicer

Turning challenges into momentum takes effort. It takes support. And it takes a willingness to believe that what you're building is worth pressing on for—even when you're navigating it with one eye twitching and your fourth coffee of the day.

But if you stay in the game—if you keep learning, keep adjusting, keep betting on the why behind it all—you’ll wake up one day with something bigger, bolder, and far more aligned than you ever planned.

That’s not blind optimism. That’s what it looks like to keep going with purpose.

So, what do you do when life hands you lemons?

You make something no one saw coming.
You add your secret ingredients.
You build systems, strategies, and experiences that weren’t there before.

You build a freaking lemonade empire.
